The thing that stands out the most for me is his ability to create a fun, inviting, and safe environment for playing the game. You can tell right away that Shawn's own enjoyment of the game is the basis for how he runs his sessions, and that enjoyment is infectious! It goes without saying that Shawn is a walking compendium of D&D knowledge, but he also brings a level of creativity that has made our sessions feel personalized and allowed our individual characters to take shape in fun and interesting ways. I really feel like my gnome wizard has a personality of its own, and Shawn goes out of his way to allow all our group's characters to live their storied lives as they journey through his thoughtfully crafted world. We had an amazing time. Shawn comes prepared and equipped and is a skilled and exciting narrator. He is extremely patient with first-timers and comes prepared with pre-rolled characters to choose from so the fun can begin right away. His figurines are colour-coded to make sure we are oriented and can speak efficiently about the game play and when one of us died ... we stayed dead. Right up until someone walked up the path and joined our party! And they were right back in the game. It was a wonderful time and I highly recommend this for any party for small groups of kids 12 and up, or for grown-ups of all ages, especially if you played as a youth. The game has improved a lot since back then (not that I didn't love it) but the game play is seriously much more exciting now. I mention small groups - we played with 3, it would have been fine with four players, but I think for first-time players a campaign with five might have failed to result in the most amazing thing of all... four hours with my 15 year-old boy and his friends without a single one of them looking at their phone. That's a staggering new record, the only way to beat that is to go deep into the forest or offshore or ... confiscate it with ensuing drama instead of fun. That's a testament to Shawn's skills but I suspect that his attention spread too thin would test the limits of the magic spell. 3-4 players for first timers is best, then 4-5 max 6 once they've all played at least once would be my recommendation. Highly recommended. One last point - this service is also an AMAZING DEAL and my only hesitation posting this review is that inevitably the prices are going to have to go up.
